Frequently Asked Questions About Aikido Classes

Is Aikido suitable for beginners?

No, fitness improves naturally.

Do I need to be fit to start Aikido?

No. Fitness develops naturally through training.

What should I wear?

Comfortable sportswear

For the Beginners Aikido Classes some loose clothing is totally fine to wear, whatever you usually wear while exercising, however if you prefer to wear Keikogi (Japanese name for our Aikido suit) that’s OK but in no way required however most people wear one after a few weeks or months of regular training.

As Aikido is a dynamic & non violent martial art based on harmony & circular movement most of the basic techniques start with a grab of the wrist, not a punch or kick, making things easier to take a bit of time to get the moves right.

You are not expected to be doing and big falls or flips during the course but we’ll show you how to do small falls as well as how to roll well as that is part of our regular training, don’t worry though it’s easier than you might think & our Dojo floor is fully padded. We also use a large blue crash mat as part of our learning – extra safe & a lot of fun too.

The class starts off with some warmup exercises followed by some light stretching to make sure our bodies are warm and ready to train. This is followed by our lead teacher demonstrating a move, followed by the class partnering up to practice while our instructors help out as needed. This is then repeated throughout the day, then the class ends with a short cool down.
